Is this business for you?

"I want to be my own boss."

Build walls in a garage or a small workshop, in panels, then install them in a day. One 117 sq ft office wall can bring in about $4,350 for 3 days of work.

"I want extra income."

Evenings and weekends, make framed moss art and sell it online, at craft fairs or in local shops. Light to ship, no care for the buyer.

"I'm an interior landscaper."

Your clients want green where live plants die: windowless halls, dark offices, meeting rooms. Now you can say yes, and add a yearly maintenance visit.

"I'm a florist or event designer."

Keep your team busy between seasons with a product that sells all year. One wall in your shop is your best salesperson.

"After trying many suppliers all around the world, I have finally found high quality moss that I can use for all my projects. Cherry on top, they are located in the US."Larry, interior landscaper, Chicago, IL

Green walls without the plants' problems

Mono-plant preserved moss wall

Real moss. Zero maintenance.

Live green walls need light, irrigation and specialists, so they rarely work indoors. Preserved moss is the 100% natural alternative your clients are looking for.

  • Nothing to water, nothing to grow: stays green for years with no light and no irrigation.
  • Quieter rooms: moss absorbs sound in open spaces, lobbies and restaurants.
  • Made in your workshop: build in panels on a table, assemble on site.
  • Clients everywhere: offices, hotels, restaurants, salons, spas, malls, airports, city halls and homeowners.

Not only walls: moss frames & wall art

No room for a wall? Sell a frame.

Same moss, same know-how, smaller format. Framed moss art is the easiest way to start: quick to make on a kitchen table, light to ship, and easy to sell online, at craft fairs or in local shops.

  • Any shape: square, round, hexagons, letters, company logos.
  • Any style: one moss for a graphic look, or moss, ferns and leaves for a jungle effect.
  • Any client: homeowners, offices, hotel rooms, restaurants, gift shops, corporate gifts.
  • Any color: reindeer moss comes in greens, but also orange, purple and more.

What a moss wall sells for

A mono-plant wall uses one type of moss for a flat, graphic look. A multi-plant wall mixes mosses, ferns and leaves for depth and volume. The denser and more varied the wall, the higher the price.

Wall styleSelling price per 10 sq ft
Sheet moss + pole moss about $290
Light multi-plant about $372
Reindeer moss about $650
Dense multi-plant about $865
Pole moss about $1,089
Very dense multi-plant about $1,375

Materials cost $116 to $550 per 10 sq ft: a multiplier of about 2 on your costs is realistic. Source: SecondFlor Business File #01.

Example: one office wall, 3 days of work

Wall 9 ft x 13 ft = 117 sq ft
Style Light multi-plant, $372 / 10 sq ft
Sales $4,352
Materials – $1,732
Labor (3 days x $300) – $900
Net margin $1,720

About $1,450 in sales per working day for one experienced person building about 30 sq ft a day.

From empty panel to finished wall

How to make a preserved moss wall
  1. Plan the design. Pick the style with the client from photos, agree on plants and proportions, validate the quote.
  2. Prepare the panels. Cut the backing into easy-to-carry panels.
  3. Glue the sheet moss. Work flat on a table, with firm pressure.
  4. Add volume. Pole moss, mood moss, then reindeer moss and leaves to fill and add color.
  5. Install. Assemble the panels on site so the joints disappear.

Pro tip: the backing

Aluminum composite panels are lighter and more rigid than drywall, stay flat for years and can be cut to the exact size of the project.

Pro tip: the glue

Solvent-free flooring adhesive holds the moss without damaging it, and dries slowly: you have time to adjust and perfect your composition.

What architects and fire marshals will ask

Our preserved reindeer moss is classified Class I under ASTM E84, with the manufacturer's declaration on the product page. It is currently our only product with a US fire classification: use it for commercial walls that require one. It also handles humidity better than other mosses, the right choice near spas and restrooms.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need training or plant skills?

No. The work is cutting, gluing and arranging. The free Business File and our tutorials walk you through it.

How much moss per square foot?

One 11-lb bulk box of reindeer moss covers about 7 sq ft. Divide your surface by 7 and add 5 to 10% for trimming.

How much should I charge?

Most walls sell between $290 and $1,375 per 10 sq ft depending on the style. Start from your material and labor costs and apply a multiplier of about 2.

How long does a moss wall last?

Years, indoors, away from direct sun, heat and high humidity. It never needs water.

Can a moss wall go outdoors or in direct sunlight?

No. Preserved moss is for indoor use only. Direct sun fades its color and rain or very high humidity damage it. For outdoor or very sunny spots, use UV-resistant artificial greenery instead.

What backing should I use?

Aluminum composite panels are the pros' favorite: light, rigid, they stay flat and can be cut to the exact size of the wall. Check whether your project requires a fire-rated backing.

Do you offer volume pricing?

Yes. You save 10% from 10 units and 20% from 20 units, plus 5%, 7% or 10% on orders over $3,000, $4,000 or $5,000. There is no minimum order.

Can I start part-time?

Yes. Framed moss art is the easiest way to start: small, quick to make and easy to sell online.
