3 fast facts about preserved flowers, preserved plants and ecology

How are preserved flowers and plants eco-friendly? The reasons could be endless - little or no chemical agents used, no waste, optimized life span… In this article, we will introduce you to three of them, to be read in 4 minutes before running to confirm your cart on SecondFlor.us.

1. Only 40% of fresh flowers are saved to be sold against 90% of preserved flowers

Let’s talk about fresh flowers first

From the beginning of the crop, the flowers are sorted. On average, we consider that one flower out of 10 doesn't pass the first stage. Cut flowers are bundled and then palletized for transport in the refrigerator. At the incoming inspection, at least 10% are thrown away. Then the unsold flowers from wholesalers and florists are tossed. In the end, they use only 4 out of 10 flowers that were cropped in the first place.

Then let’s take a look at preserved flowers

Not all blooms that grow out of the ground are suitable. On average, one flower out of 10 doesn't pass the first sorting. Almost all the flowers put in preservation are processed. They are then transported to their destination under no special conditions. At SecondFlor, we always favor transport by boat for a better carbon balance. On arrival, 100% of the products are suitable for sale. For wholesalers and florists, no loss is to be expected, for they have the time to work and sell them.

2. Preserved flowers can be used at least 50 times longer than a fresh-cut flower

Preserved plants are a natural and sustainable product. The purpose of the different preservation processes is to make them last longer by replacing the sap with a mainly natural solution. Even if its use is limited to specific conditions of use, we can't give a definite lifespan to a preserved flower. A cut flower can be used for about a week, and a preserved flower can be kept for many years. Thus, it is estimated that it can be used at least 50 times longer than a cut flower.

3. 90% of the preserved flowers and plants are imported by boat

As mentioned swiftly above, we always favor transport by boat. Preservation must be carried out using ultra-fresh raw material. Therefore, the preservation plants are located at the same place where the flowers are produced. We then don't need any transport at this point. The ships that transport them are neither refrigerated nor heated, and sail at their own pace from one continent to another. This is why preserved plants travel primarily by boat to reach our facilities. This transportation method greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, not to mention the fact that the storage of preserved flowers doesn't require any additional means.

Trying and embracing preserved flowers and plants for your business is as beneficial to your turnover as it is to the environment. Now is the time to shop on SecondFlor.us.
